Well you may ask - as I mulled over the title of this blog where I wanted to express my musings on being a grandmother - I was reflecting on my own grandmothers who had a great influence on who I am today.
My paternal grandmother called Eileen or 'Eil' for short, was an absolute treasure who survived a very poor and dysfunctional childood and life growing up at Parramatta girls home with the nuns who treated her badly - she was illiterate but hardworking but oh so kind hearted.
She had many sayings and one of then was - dont stand around like a Dickie on a Dirt Tin - she was very busy and always 'doing'.
Nanna Eil also used this expression if she felt uncomfortable in social situations - she would come home and say I felt like a 'Dickie on a Dirt Tin'
Therefore:
Dickie: noun - a bird who sits around idly waiting for something to happen
Dirt Tin: noun - a slang word for a garbage bin
